About this artwork
"Splash" belongs to my series of word paintings, where a single word is spelled out in the objects it evokes.
I work in acrylic on canvas, building the apricot ground in warm, chalky layers with a visible grain, so the surface reads as sun-baked terracotta rather than paint.
Each letter is formed of deep blue water drops, painted one by one and given a single pale highlight, each tilting on its own axis so the six letters seem caught mid-fall rather than set in place.
The proportions are the widest in the series, stretching the word across the canvas until it takes on the horizontal rush of water thrown sideways.
On a wall, the contrast does the work: cool blue against warm orange, the visual equivalent of hitting cold water on a hot day.
