About this artwork
"Beach" belongs to my series of word paintings, where a single word is spelled out in the objects it evokes.
I work in acrylic on canvas, drawing the sky blue across the surface in fine horizontal passes so the weave stays visible, giving the ground the softness of a sun-bleached towel.
Each letter is formed of yellow scallop shells, painted one by one, their ribs drawn in with quick amber lines — a hand-inked detail that keeps them close to something found rather than something designed.
The shells press right up against one another, so the five letters hold together as a single warm mass against the blue, dense where the other works in the series are spaced out.
On a wall, it carries the plain optimism of a good beach day: yellow on blue, and nothing more complicated than that.
