About this artwork
"Sail" belongs to my series of word paintings, where a single word is spelled out in the objects it evokes.
I work in acrylic on canvas, brushing the navy in long vertical strokes that stay legible in the surface, so the ground holds the depth of open water at dusk rather than a flat block of colour.
Each letter is formed of small sailboats, painted one by one, their cream and coral sails catching an unseen light — the only warmth in the picture, and enough to carry it.
The boats keep their upright bearing wherever they fall in a letter, so the four letters read as a scattered fleet holding formation rather than as drawn strokes.
On a wall, it is the quietest work in the series: deep, still, and steady, the kind of blue a room settles into.
