About this artwork
"Juicy" belongs to my series of word paintings, where a single word is spelled out in the objects it evokes.
I work in acrylic on canvas, keeping the pale blue thin and softly grained so it recedes entirely, leaving the red to carry the whole charge of the picture.
Each letter is assembled from lacquered red lips, painted one by one with a single highlight, so that no two sit at the same tilt and the word seems to have been kissed onto the canvas rather than written.
The word sits high on the surface, the empty lower half holding it like a held breath.
On a wall, it is unapologetically flirtatious: five letters of pure red against pale blue, and nothing else asked of the viewer.
