About this artwork
"Chill" belongs to my series of word paintings, where a single word is spelled out in the objects it evokes.
I work in acrylic on canvas, laying the lilac in a soft, powdery flatness that cools the whole surface and lets the red sit forward without ever heating it.
Each letter is built from red ice lollies, painted one by one, their pale wooden sticks running through the strokes like the scaffolding of the letterforms — visible, structural, and slightly absurd.
The word runs the full width of the canvas, evenly spaced, with the calm regularity of something set out to be admired rather than eaten.
On a wall, it does exactly what it says: it lowers the temperature of a room and holds it there.
