About this artwork
"The Old Oak" is a contemporary figurative work that explores freedom, belonging, and the particular architecture children make of a tree, through a palette of leaf green, bark brown, and pale summer sky. Working in acrylic on canvas, I build depth through soft, layered color, delicate transitions, and a tactile painted surface. The vertical format follows the trunk from root to canopy and gives the composition a strong upward cadence and a real sense of height. I use the fork of the branches, the hanging figure at the left, and the single child seated in the grass below to guide the eye and set the rhythm of the work. Four children, one tree, and four entirely different ideas of what to do with it.
