About this artwork
Friday Evening" is a contemporary still life that explores welcome, ritual, and the particular warmth of a table laid for people who have not yet arrived, through a palette of scarlet, cobalt, and warm honeyed wood. Working in acrylic on canvas, I build the picture in flat, saturated color and dense pattern, setting painted ceramics and a checked cloth against the plain grain of the table. The vertical format draws the eye from the books in the foreground up through the candles to the bouquet and gives the composition an open, generous presence. I use the two lit flames, the covered challah, the silver cup and the bowl of olives to guide the eye and set the rhythm of the work. These are the objects that open Shabbat — bread, wine, light — laid out with the same care as the flowers and the books beside them, because in a house like this they belong to the same evening.
