About this artwork
"Little Chefs" is a contemporary figurative work that explores concentration, apprenticeship, and the seriousness children bring to a task they have chosen, through a palette of warm blush, cream, and soft cornflower blue. Working in acrylic on canvas, I build depth through close-valued color, delicate transitions, and a tactile painted surface. The horizontal format lays the ingredients out across the canvas like a still life and gives the composition the calm order of a well-set table. I use the sweep of the rolling pin, the arc of the mixing bowl, and the scatter of eggs, butter and strawberries to guide the eye and set the rhythm of the work. The finished cake already sits at the right — the painting is about the making, not the result.
